Spoke to Stanley Browne of Browne-Nederlander yesterday about Margherita.  Bob Nederlander Jr. has now changed the financing strategy. He wantso investor for the whole production. Also showed a major interest in the folk opera Lincoln and God I am writing with Maryland composer John Ward.   Mr. Browne explained that Broadway has changed.   Once audiences were half tourists and half New Yorkers. Now 70 percent tourists—and tourists like musicals.

Next, segments from three documentaries she made for National Geographic Television: The Life and Legend of Jane Goodall: My Life with the Chimpanzees; The Gauchos of Argentina; and El Dorado Gold: Gold miners in Venezuela.
She will also show extracts from: Lords of the Garden about the Korowai who live in tree houses in an Indonesian rain forest on the island of New Guinea; a film for the PBS series, “Nature”, The American Buffalo: Battling Back; Witness to Hope, a two-hour film biography on the life of Pope John Paul II that aired on PBS; and Moby-Dick, made for the Discovery Channel’s Great Book series.
After graduating from Sarah Lawrence College with a major in filmmaking, Ms. Hallet served in the Peace Corps in Tunisia, where she made a film on the Berber villages of southern Tunisia. This fact based two act drama should be of special interest to NPC members because the subject deals with that tragic period in Italian during the Holocaust   when 1500 hundred Jews were sent to their deaths at Auschwitz.  The drama touches on the role of the Church and the Holocaust, and examines forgiveness amidst three conversions. Rome's aloof and scholarly Chief Rabbi Zolli loses faith following the apparent slaughter of his Polish family. .  He receives asylum in the Vatican, where he comes to appreciate Jesus as God suffering for humanity. The Rabbi re-finds faith and converts to Roman Catholicism. This is seen as a betrayal of his spiritual duty and a defection to the age-old enemy. Was his conversion one of conviction or merely gratitude? What does he demand at his baptism that eventually removes a major symbol of discrimination?
