People of the past appear in various forms in this two-act mystery-comedy set on Logan Street in the heart of Charleston, South Carolina’s renowned Historic District. Indomitable Charleston matron Charlotte Butler raises thousands of flowers to the hum of classical music, cultivates birds, plays championship bridge, ballroom dances, sometimes cleans her own house, and spars with both her parrot Jacob and flighty neighbor Ginny (Gin) Middleton. Gin's latest flame is the distinguished former New Hampshire Senator Mark Smythe, now an Archdale Street resident, who appears to have a curious interest in Charlotte. When Gin has to cancel one of her dates with Mark because of an emergency in Savannah, he slips in and visits Charlotte. The visit proves to be more than one of mere curiosity, as we discover that these two unique people have much in common. Charlotte makes Mark accompany her to St. Phillip’s Cemetery at night where they encounter someone she does not want to see.
We will show previews of this motion picture and you will meet the Director, Cinematographer, Screenwriter and Cast.

Paul, my eleventh play, premieres at the Cosmos Club tomorrow night.

Please sign up for the Cosmos Theatre presentation of Paul by Anthony E. Gallo on October 17. C. The leading role will be played by Shakespearean actor Michel Tolaydo. The play examines the complex and contradictory life of Christianity’s second leading theological architect through his Epistles, from Romans to Titus, and the writings of Josephus. Paul’s impact not only on the now two billion Christians around the world but tangentially on non-Christians as well is not disputed. The play follows him from being a deeply religious Jewish leader, successful businessman, civic leader, and persecutor of fringe cults to becoming an apostle of the Nazarean following his epiphany on the road to Damascus. The narrative traces his conflicts with members of the new cult, then with his fellow disciples, the Romans, Greeks, Jewish leaders, his own family and friends, and the people he tries to convince. It asks if Paul’s spiritual conversion also resulted in personal character conversion Cast:

Successful staging of Vandergrift! at Lincolnia in Virginia last night.

Some viewer comments

A note to let you know how much we enjoyed a staged reading of Tony Gallo's marvelous play "Vandergrift!" last night (Sept. 12) at the Lincolnia Senior Center in Fairfax County, VA. It should be required viewing for all borough residents, it's that good. For us, it brought back many fond memories. Inez is a Vandergrift native, of course, and after our marriage we spent nine years there before moving to Virginia in 1967. We visit Vandergrift periodically and it was our distinct pleasure to tour the museum earlier this year. What a grand enterprise, All involved should be proud.

-------------------------------------------

,
Faye and I thoroughly enjoyed "Vandergrift." You captured the essence of the industrial eras represented in a very entertaining fashion. At the finish I selfishly wished Ida Tarbell would have adhered to her fleeting determination to go to the Methodist Church, but I realize that would have been disloyal to McMurtry's preference for Presbyterianism. Thanks for having this delightful performance at Lincolnia

Bruce Brennen, as the Scottish mill worker with union interests, gave a compelling performance throughout. Sherman McDaniel brought laughter and realism to her role as the fortune teller…. A.O. Gutierrez should be applauded for the creative design of the set, lighting and construction. .. The music helped the audience reminiscence the many decades celebrated throughout the play. ---The costume design skillfully stayed true to the essence of each period. Jim Link: Drama Critic-Greenbelt News
The bittersweet shock of recognition will greet Greenbelters lucky enough to see Vandergrift! now at Greenbelt Arts Center . The true story of a southwestern Pennsylvania steel mill town, fictionally enhanced by author Tony Gallo, takes us through 50 years of community turmoil and evolution. From the 1890's through WWII the citizens of Vandergrift are racked by issues of union organization, race and immigration, environmental quality, architecture and aesthetics, in a planned community meant to be a workers paradise.

The prime mover of this utopian vision is the morally ambiguous millionaire industrialist George McMurtry, who funds his noble dream purely to maximize profits and to break the dreaded "socialist" labor unions. The philistine McMurtry is convinced he can slap a patina of high culture and fragile civility onto Vandergrift by contracting Frederick Law Olmsted to design the town; the distinguished architect is little more than a hired gun to McMurtry.

However, the fishbone in McMurtry's throat, his indefatigable antagonist is the fearless muckraking journalist Ida Tarbell, who has already spoken truth to power by exposing John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil Company's monopolistic criminality. McMurtry's other nemesis is John Dunmore, the hard drinking union organizer who evolves into a respectable married man and effective city councilman.

Big George actually grows fond of Tarbell's integrity and charm, even after she forces him to admit that Olmsted's faux-Greek municipal center is nothing but a "Scotch-Irish Acropolis." He is particularly impressed with her answer when he asks why she keeps tilting at windmills: "I once thought I could not reconstruct the world because I am a woman. But then I realized I could reconstruct the wold because I am a woman."

As the decades pass by the audience is treated to snippets of "Over There" by Irving Berlin, "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" by and Bruce Springsteen's "My Hometown."

The cast, from Anthony Gallo's Seventh Street Playhouse in Washington , DC , is uniformly excellent, packed with troupers. Jan Forbes (George McMurtry) has appeared onstage in over 100 productions since 1965. Helenmary Ball (Ida Tarbell) ages beautifully right before our eyes. And why not? A talented actress, she is also the director and costume designer.

Find out how this troubled town reacts to the Japanese economic resurgence and the use of outsourcing. Do yourself a favor and and see Vandergrift! on Friday and Saturday at 8 PM, Sunday at 2 PM, on June10, 11, and 12.

On Monday, Seventh Street Playhouse begins rehearsals for a full production of Vandergrift! at the Greenbelt Arts Center in June.

In the early 1890’s, steel tycoon George McMurtry, tries to produce a unique marriage between architecture and industrialism to build a workingman's paradise in southwestern Pennsylvania.

But his goal is also to destroy strikers and keep compliant workers happy. He hires Frederick Law Olmsted, the Nation's preeminent architect, to design the town of Vandergrift, named after his partner, Captain Jacob J. Vandergrift. The Vandergrift plant becomes the largest steel mill in the world

Ida Tarbell, who will someday expose J. D. Rockefeller, is intrigued by the idea and visits the town. She and McMurtry clash over his flawed idealism and her subconscious biases.

She revisits the town four times over the next half a century, each time reexamining her own and McMurtry’s ideals as the Nation goes through wars, depressions, the New Deal, the Union movement, and the final collapse of the steel industry.

McMurtry’s dream and Olmsted’s design live on despite the collapse of both the steel industry and almost all large American corporations existing at the time of Vandergrift’s inception.

People of the past appear in various forms in this two-act play set on Logan Street in the heart of Charleston, South Carolina’s renowned Historic District. We meet indomitable matron Charlotte Butler, who raises thousands of flowers to the hum of classical music, cultivates birds, plays championship bridge, ballroom dances daily, sometimes cleans her own house, and spars with both her parrot Jacob and flighty neighbor Ginny (Gin) Middleton. The visit proves to be more than one of mere curiosity, as we discover that these two bizarre people have much in common. Charlotte makes Mark accompany her to St. Philip’s Cemetery at night where they encounter someone she does not want to see.
