Superb sold out staging of The EatonWoman at Cosmos Theatre.

Cosmos Theatre   Cosmos Club  in DC

STAGED READING: THE EATON WOMAN

 Saturday, October 18, 11:30 a.m.

The Eaton Woman is not well suited for people who hate gossip.   But the play dispels any notion that Washington was once a kinder, gentler city.

This historically based two act dramedy by Anthony E. Gallo  is all about morals, adultery, lies, deception, women’s roles in Washington Society, the quasi downfall of the Jackson Administration, and the most beautiful woman in Washington history.  Others say the most immoral and abrasive.  All agree on one thing.  She and her husband, the US Secretary of the Army, Jackson biographer, and Tennessee Senator (elected at age 28) created more controversy than any other power couple in Power Washington’s political history

Andrew Jackson defeated the British in New Orleans and the Adams family of Massachusetts, vanquished Native American Indians, was involved in at least twelve duels, and was a loved and respected  hero of the American people.  But how was he to handle the Petticoat Rebellion brought on by the Cabinet wives who objected to the de facto first lady and boycotted the White House?  But it was a matter of honor.  Beloved Rachel Jackson died shortly following her husbands election to the presidency of the United, killed by hurtful attacks on her morality.   The seventh President therefore would defend his Margaret O’ Neal Timberlake Eaton.

Through 79 years she goes though three husbands raises more eyebrows when she marries in her late fifties, and spends her last days reminiscing and defending her morality.  Was she responsible for Marin Van Buren’s ascendancy to the presidency? And how about John Calhoun?

Gun Carry at National Press Club

Gun experts, speaking at a National Press Club Newsmakers news conference on Oct. 9, disagreed on the effects of citizens carrying concealed guns while agreeing that permits to carry them are appropriate if properly restricted.
George Lyon, one of the litigants whose suit led to the overthrow of the D.C. ban of carrying weapons, emphasized the benefits of armed citizens while Paul Helmke, former president and chief executive officer of the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, focused on the risks.
Lyon called police and emergency medical service personnel "second responders" to crime because the first responders are the intended victims and witnesses. Carrying a gun will not guarantee safety, though, because it is ``at best only about equalizing the odds," he said.
He still favored evening the odds. He cited instances of a woman confronted with a much larger assailant, an unarmed person facing an armed attacker, and a fit young man facing several attackers as situations in which a gun could change the odds.
Helmke, who also is a professor at Indiana University, said carrying guns in public increases the risk to others and changes the behavior of three groups: criminals who perceive other people are likely to be armed; police who expect guns to be more likely in confrontations; and people in general who, if they have guns, may use them in situations of anger.
Both speakers noted that Supreme Court rulings permit guns inside the home, and that the debate is about carrying weapons outside the home. While conceding this, Helmke reported that a gun in the home is 21 times more likely to be used against the resident. He also called carrying guns outside the home a policy and personal issue, not a constitutional one.
The speakers agreed that permits to carry guns should be restricted by training requirements, background checks, and mental evaluation of applicants. Helmke, a former mayor of Fort Wayne, Indiana, added that local law enforcement officials should also approve permits because they are aware of specific situations.
"I trust local law enforcement,'' he said. "I trust police."
Helmke noted that most jurisdictions also ban guns from sensitive areas and suggested that all of D.C. could be called a restricted area because of the danger to diplomats, members of Congress and justices.
Lyon argued that violent crime decreases in places where carrying guns is allowed. He cited survey evidence that 91 percent of police favor armed citizens. Other important steps to reduce violent crime would be legalizing drugs, which would reduce gang shootings, and improving the mental health system, he said.
He quoted Cathy Lanier, D.C. chief of police, as saying that allowing guns would have a minimal effect on street crime. Forty-four states permit concealed-carrying and 11 million Americans carry guns, he said.

Is Gun Carry Good for the Nation – and its Capital City?

Washington, DC – Should U.S. citizens be allowed to carry weapons?  All fifty states have laws on both the ownership of guns and the right to carry them.   The U.S. District Court ruled in July that Washington D.C.’s ban on the carrying of all weapons violated the Second Amendment. To comply with the ruling, the D.C. City Council is has rewritten thee law to require District residents to demonstrate a need to carry a concealed weapon.

George Lyon, one of the litigants whose suit led to the overthrow of the District law, and Paul Helmke, former President and CEO off the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, will discuss whether "gun carry" is beneficial to society at a National Press Club Newsmakers news conference scheduled for Thursday, October 9 at 3 p.m. in the club’s Zenger Room, on the 13th Floor of the National Press Building, 529 14th St. NW, Washington DC 20045.

Like all Newsmaker events, this news conference is open to credentialed press and NPC club members, free of charge. No advance registration is required.

Academy Award Winner Helen Caldicott to speak at National Press Club Today

The Ukraine Crisis: Is Nuclear Conflict Likely?
Washington, DC – Australia’s Dr. Helen Caldicott – a longtime advocate of citizen action to address nuclear and environmental crisis, founding President of Physicians for Social Responsibility and a 1985 Nobel Peace Prize nominee – believes the current crisis in Ukraine is evidence that the Cold War has not only returned and could well morph into a nuclear exchange between Russia and the U.S.
For the first time in recent history, Russia and the U.S. are in a state of confrontation. Both nations have recently conducted nuclear war games, and some reports suggest that the state of alert of their nuclear arsenals has been raised.
At a National Press Club Newsmakers news conference on Wednesday, October 8, Caldicott will argue that the Cold War has not only returned, but is heating up. The nuclear exchange she fears would result in ozone depletion, radioactive contamination, massive fire storms and a nuclear winter. Even without a nuclear confrontation, Ukraine hosts 15 nuclear power plants. Conventional warfare could cause several of them to melt down.
This Newsmakers news conference is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Wednesday, October 8 in the National Press Club’s Zenger Room, on the 13th Floor of the National Press Building, 529 14th St. NW, Washington DC 20045.
Like all Newsmakers events, the news conference is open to credentialed media and club members, free of charge. No advance registration is required.
